I'm not a horror fan, but I do love spooky and paranormal books this time of year, ones steeped in atmosphere and autumnal vibes. So, for those who are like me and don't like their halloween reading super scary, I put together a list of paranormal romances that I enjoy this time of year. As usual, it was difficult to narrow down, but I did my best.

The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook asks its members to share six sentence snippets from their work each weekend (I'll beg forgiveness in advance for sometimes going over the sentence limit!). Check out the group's Facebook page to read all the snippets and add lots of great books to your TBR. You'll find all sorts of books with the common thread that the main character identifies as LGBTQ. Since Asexual Awareness Week ends October 25th, I decided to share a snippet from To Love the Dragon King, one of my books with an ace spec main character (the others are The Merchant's Love and A Dance of Water and Air/A Harmony of Fire and Earth). In To Love the Dragon King, Lysander, king of Ivria, is trying to uncover the extent of a plot against himself and his kingdom when he meets Sascha, a beautiful man being used as a pawn in that plot by his family. The (overly long) snippet I'm sharing today is a conversation between Sascha (who is gray ace) and his cousin Romilly (who is demisexual and will absolutely get their own book in the series!) after the king has indicated he might want Sascha to be his concubine. Happy Asexual Awareness Week! For Ace Week, I've put together a post of some books with ace spec characters that I've enjoyed (and as usual, had a difficult time narrowing it down and choosing books!). I've also listed my own books with ace spec characters below, if you're looking for some more fantasy romance with ace spec characters.

This weekend, I'm sharing a snippet from The Prince's Consort, which was first published ten years ago on October 16th—my tenth anniversary of being a published author! The Prince's Consort is a royalty/commoner romance with lots of magic, secrets, and intrigue. My writing has definitely improved since I wrote this book, but I still love Amory and Philip and their story. This snippet is Amory's first glimpse of Philip. October 16th was my tenth anniversary as a published author. The Prince's Consort was first published on that day in 2015, and I can still remember the nerves and excitement I felt. I was at a New Jersey Romance Writers conference that day, surrounded by my fellow authors who shared in my happiness and attending workshops that distracted me a bit from my nerves. I wanted to write something profound to mark the day—because it feels big!—but my brain does not want to come up with something profound. I still needed to mark the day here, though. So, ten years since my first book. At the time, I had so many hopes and dreams for my writing career. And in the years since, there have been ups and downs, challenges and unexpected changes. There have also been ten more books, fun events, new author friends, the joys of meeting readers old and new in person and virtually. I still have so many hopes and dreams for my writing career, and though right now writing is more challenging, I still wouldn't want to do anything else. I'm so grateful for and to all my readers and everyone who has supported me in this journey. Thanks for reading!

This weekend, I'm sharing a snippet from The Spymaster's Secret because it will have been out in the world six years this coming week. I love this book—I had so much fun writing it, writing Alexander and Marcus as they fell in love. Alexander is a flirtatious royal with hidden depths and Marcus is a mysterious older widower, and their story includes lots of banter, shenanigans at a masquerade ball, plus some spies and intrigue. Here's a snippet from the beginning of chapter two. Happy October, everyone! I feel like I blinked and September disappeared and we were into Fall, and while I love Fall, I don't love time passing so quickly. But since it is, it's already time for me to talk about my September reading.

Today I'm sharing a snippet from A Dance of Water and Air because it had an anniversary this past week—seven years out in the world! (If you're going to be at Rainbow Space Magic this weekend, you'll hear me read another snippet from the book too.) A Dance of Water and Air is the first book in the Elemental Magicae duology. In Dance, Prince Edmund is told that he must marry the queen of the neighboring country in an alliance marriage, but when he arrives there, something isn't right and Edmund becomes close to—and then falls in love with—the queen's brother, Arden. Then Edmund is accused of trying to assassinate the queen and he and Arden going on the run, trying to find a way to save themselves and their countries. This snippet is from the very beginning of the book. Edmund is enjoying a peaceful moment...which is about to be interrupting. For Hispanic Heritage Month, I'm sharing some books by Latinx authors that I've enjoyed. It's always difficult to make these lists, since there are so many great books, and I have a miserable time choosing and then invariably I remember a bunch I wish I'd included...sigh. In any case, here are some books I hope you enjoy:
This year's Rainbow Space Magic virtual con is coming up this weekend, October 4th and 5th. The conference showcases LGBTQ spec fic through a range of panel discussions and readings, plus a keynote speaker and time to socialize, and it's all free and presented through Zoom. I always enjoy RSM so much. The panel discussions are always so interesting, and the readings make me add to my already towering TBR pile. This year, I will be doing a reading (though I haven't decided what yet...) during the session at 4:30 pm eastern and joining a panel discussion about writing queer desire (intimacy, consent, and power dynamics) on Sunday also at 4:30 pm eastern. You can find the full schedule and register at www.rainbowspacemagic.org. I hope to see you there! Just quickly editing this post after RSM to add that if you missed the conference, you can watch all the readings and panels at RSM's YouTube channel. My panel is at this link, and my reading (I read first out of the group) is at this one. |
