Rainbow Snippets November 7-8

It's weekend, and time for more Rainbow Snippets! The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook asks its members to share six sentence snippets from their work each weekend. Check out the group's Facebook page to read all the snippets and add lots of great books to your TBR. You'll find all sorts of books with the common thread that the main character identifies as LGBTQ+

For today's snippet, I'm sharing more from The Envoy's Honor, the next book in my Chronicles of Tournai series, which will be out everywhere November 9th (though it's already available in ebook from NineStar Press). The Envoy's Honor is an adversaries to lovers romance between two men whose devotion to family and country is putting them on opposites sides of a dispute that it will take careful diplomacy to get them out of. Unwitting attraction complicates matters, of course, and just when they might be getting closer, someone is murdered. But at least they know neither of them could've done it since they were...together...at the time. And there are more dragon shifters in this one! I'm picking up right after last week's snippet, as we find out what has Ligeia so upset. (I went a few sentences over, but I thought it was necessary this time!)

She halted a few steps inside, after pushing the door closed behind her
--it was amazing the guards had even let her through looking the way she did. “Fine, I’m fine,” she said, breathless. Had she run through the palace to get here? “But...”

“What is it, Ligeia?” Philip asked as her gaze darted around the room. He didn’t exactly use the tone of voice that Griffen identified as more prince than family, but the way he said the words commanded attention, nonetheless. From all of them.

Ligeia focused on Philip immediately and took a breath. “Some people came to the house, looking for Corentin. From, um, his home.”

Marcus and Maxen looked confused, but everyone else froze. They knew exactly what that meant.

The dragons.

You can find out more about The Envoy's Honor here. Also, The Envoy's Honor is currently 30% off at NineStar Press, along with my other books, so you can get it there cheaper and early! Thanks for reading today. Hope you're all staying safe and well!

For today's snippet, I'm sharing more from The Envoy's Honor, the next book in my Chronicles of Tournai series, which will be out November 9th (and check out that gorgeous cover by the amazing Natasha Snow!). This week's snippet follows directly after last week's, as things begin to fall apart.

A sharp rap on the door saved him from having to convince Tristan and Alexander. Before anyone could move to answer the door, it flew open, and Ligeia tumbled into the room.

Surprise froze Griffen for an instant. His sister had elected to stay home that evening—though Philip and Amory would’ve been happy to have her join them if she wanted--with Patia and Idalia, two of the cousins who’d become Bastien’s wards several months ago. She shouldn’t have been at the palace, certainly not looking wild-eyed and near panic with her light-brown hair escaping its pins and her dress one she never left the house in.

He broke his paralysis and spoke at the same time Bastien did. “Ligeia?”

“What happened?” Bastien continued. “Are you all right?”

You can find more about The Envoy's Honor here. And the rest of my books are still 30% off at NineStar Press if you need some weekend reading. Hope you're all staying safe and well, and Happy Halloween!

“You seemed far away for a moment,” Tristan said, capturing Griffen’s attention again.

“Just thinking. I guess I’m easily distracted tonight.”

“I hope by something good.” Alexander winked as he appeared in front of them, decanter in hand, ready to pour more wine for them. His eyes narrowed as he studied Griffen. “Uh oh. Not good?”

Tristan’s gaze sharpened. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Griffen smiled, warmed by their concern. When neither man looked reassured, he added, “Really.”

And there wasn’t—though they still didn’t look as if they believed him. He was just…thoughtful.

For today's snippet, I'm switching to The Envoy's Honor, the next book in my Chronicles of Tournai series, which will be out next month. Here's the very beginning of The Envoy's Honor.
Picture

Griffen’s day had been utterly normal—boring, even—until the dragons arrived.

The only mildly interesting thing that had happened was Bastien for once being convinced to attend a family dinner at the palace. Griffen didn’t delude himself into thinking his persuasion and prodding had anything to do with his older brother’s decision. No, Philip’s order had gotten Bastien and Corentin, the man he would soon marry, here. The prince rarely ordered his family about—and never in this type of situation, so Philip’s edict had probably been at least half joking—but Bastien was too dutiful to ignore it, despite his preference to be something of a hermit.

Preorder links and cover coming soon, but you can find more information about The Envoy's Honor here. And if you'd like to catch up on other books in the series, they're all 30% off at NineStar Press. Thanks for reading today, and stay safe and well!

I'm a little later than usual with my Rainbow Snippet this week—unpacking is still consuming my life, and I keep losing track of time! Hopefully, I can get things back to normal soon.

Today, I'm sharing another snippet from The Sorcerer's Guardian, which is now back out in the world with a gorgeous new cover by Natasha Snow. (But I may switch over soon to snippets from my upcoming new release, The Envoy's Honor, which is currently with the proofreader.) The Sorcerer's Guardian is an opposites attract fantasy romance between an arrogant sorcerer and a loyal guard captain sent on a mission for the crown. They spend a lot of time clashing with each other and manage to tumble into love along the way (and at one point, they are stuck at an inn with only one room left and only one bed...). I'm picking up in this snippet just a little bit after the last. Savarin was told by the princes that Captain Loriot would accompany him on his journey for protection, which Savarin was less than pleased about. But he was unable to change Prince Philip's mind. Savarin and Loriot have now left the princes' presence and are discussing the matter together.
Picture

“I don’t need a minder or a protector.” Savarin didn’t raise his voice,
but his tone was firm--it probably intimidated all the lesser mortals the great sorcerer dealt with. Loriot wouldn’t be intimidated.

“Prince Philip believes otherwise, and though I believe I’m needed here to ensure the safety of the royal family, I cannot disobey his order.” Even if he wanted to. He would do his duty to the prince. “The prince has made up his mind. There’s little sense in arguing with him about it.”

He didn’t add Savarin had tried and hadn’t gotten far. He didn’t need to—the disgruntled look in Savarin’s eye told Loriot he realized it quite well.

You can find more about The Sorcerer's Guardian here. Also, The Sorcerer's Guardian is still 30% at NineStar Press, along with all my other books. Grab some books to curl up with this fall! Thanks for reading my belated snippet, and I hope you're all staying safe and healthy!

I skipped Rainbow Snippets last week...mostly because I completely forgot to put a post together in all the chaos surrounding my move at the end of last week. But, I'm now in the new house, and though there are still boxes everywhere, I'm settling in enough to know what day it is and get a snippet up.

This snippet is set a little further along in the same scene as the last one I posted. Savarin has informed the princes that they have a problem with Tournai's protection spells and that he plans to go investigate them more.
Picture

“Captain Loriot,” Prince Philip said after the door opened and closed, “perfect timing. Thank you for joining us.”

“Of course, Your Highness. You had need of me?”

Savarin glanced over as Loriot stepped up beside Lord Etan’s chair. The captain appeared his usual competent self this afternoon; Savarin hadn’t seen him look less than competent in all their association. His thick, dark hair all in place, short beard neatly trimmed, deep-red-and- brown uniform perfectly pressed. The royal seal was embroidered on itsbreast, his captain’s insignia displayed on the jacket’s arm.

“Yes, Captain,” Prince Philip said. “Master Savarin will be traveling along Tournai’s borders on an important mission for us. I’d like you to accompany him.”

Shock stole Savarin’s thoughts for a moment, but the protest came quickly. “Your Highness, that’s hardly necessary.”

You can find more about The Sorcerer's Guardian here. It's also still 30% off at NineStar Press, along with all my other books. Thanks for reading today, and stay safe and well, everyone!

This week, I'm skipping just a little bit ahead. In this snippet, Savarin is explaining a problem he found to the princes and Lord Etan.
Picture

“What did you find?” Prince Philip asked.

“I traveled the majority of our eastern border with Elleri before I had to return to Jumelle. From what I’ve seen, the barrier formed by the protections follows the border, or at least it does in that area. I did find spots where it seemed weaker.”

“Weaker how?” Prince Amory asked.

He fumbled for a moment to find the words to explain it to someone with no training in sorcery. He might have struggled to explain it to someone with training as well—the protections didn’t behave like any others he had ever seen. “Think of the spells surrounding Tournai as a barrier, a thin but strong wall, Your Highness. In a couple of spots, the wall has gotten thinner, weaker. As if someone has been pushing at it, wearing it away.”

“Trying to get through it,” Lord Etan murmured.

Today, I'm sharing another snippet from The Sorcerer's Guardian, the last of my former DSP titles to be rereleased. It will be back out in the world on Monday (yay!), with a gorgeous new cover by Natasha Snow. The Sorcerer's Guardian is an opposites attract fantasy romance between an arrogant sorcerer and a loyal guard captain sent on a mission for the crown. (I went a little over the sentence limit this week—I'm sorry!)

Savarin sank into a chair in his study and reveled in the quiet. He tipped his head to rest against the back of his chair and closed his eyes. Aside from him, only the cook and a maid remained in the house, and they
wouldn’t bother him. No one would see him take this moment to himself.

What he needed was sleep. He hadn’t gotten enough since he’d been pulled in to help find the kidnapped baby. The magic use had worn him down, even without lack of sleep, but he hadn’t wanted to be unavailable until the baby was found, in case he was needed again. The baby was home with her father now, unharmed and seemingly no worse for her experience, and the culprits were in Loriot’s hands, as they should be. The captain of the royal guard was more than capable of handlingeverything from there; Savarin’s part was done.

Just in time for him to lecture at the university.

Loriot wants sleep more than anything, but he has to see someone else first.

Trudging up the stairs took the last of his energy, but he forced
himself to bypass his own bedchamber. He couldn’t go to bed without seeing Alain. Not after so long away, not even if it hadn’t been very long. The door to the room at the back of the house was partially open. He peeked in as he pushed it open the rest of the way. The room was tidy, except for a veritable city built of blocks in the middle of the rug. The nursemaid noticed him first, but Alain wasn’t far behind. He looked up, his bright-green eyes—twins of Loriot’s own--lighting up, and something inside Loriot melted, just as it always did under those eyes.

“Papa!”

Inside, the house was quiet. The formal parlor was empty, which was unsurprising as they rarely used it
--only when Joceline and Oriana chose to entertain. He wanted more than anything to go up to his bedchamber and collapse into his bed for the next few days, but he couldn’t. Couldn’t even collapse for a few hours without checking on his family. But he knew where at least one of them was likely to be at this time of day.

The sitting room at the back of the house was quiet, too, so quiet he could hear the scratch of his sister’s pen on paper as he stepped into the doorway. Joceline sat at her writing desk, papers spread around her, pen flying across the page. Despite the silence, she didn’t notice him. A good writing day, then. He hated to disturb her, but she’d want to know he was home.
