An Unlikely Coven by A.M Kvita (Urban fantasy): Joan Greenwood, black sheep of the most powerful witch family in New York, went away to college and grad school and has barely spoken to her (really, really horrible) family since, but now she has been called home. The magical world is in chaos because there are rumors that a spell was used to turn a human into a witch. Joan's family wants to control the spell and the person it was used on, something Joan objects to. She sets out with her best friend and the found family/coven they build along the way to save this person and the whole city. I loved this—the world building of a magical New York filled with witches, vampires, and ghosts is fantastic, as are the characters. And the found family aspect is perfect. There's a hint of a romance brewing and some ominous portends for the second book in the series, which will be out this year.
Love's a Witch by Tricia O'Malley (M/F paranormal romance): Sloane and her sisters are returning to their hometown after years away at the request of their grandmother. They haven't been able to stay in one place for any amount of time because the witches in their family are cursed—a curse by an angry, jealous fellow witch that has followed them through the generations—and their grandmother believes it's time for them to break the curse. But when they arrive the town's mayor/guardian wants them out before they can ruin Briarhaven, which happens to have built a vibrant tourist industry out of being a magical town. It took me a bit to get into this book, but I did enjoy it and I'll pick up the next book in the series when it comes out. If you like witchy, light romance reads with adorable animal familiars, you may enjoy this one.
Nerds, Words & Werecats by Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes (M/M paranormal romance): This book is related to the Witchwolf series by these authors, but you don't have to have read that to read this. Landon is a house cat shifter who moves to San Francisco to start a new life after his (horrible) fiancé leaves him for his (horrible) brother and his (horrible) family takes their side. Dean is a panther shifter who lost his boyfriend/bandmate to an illness a few years ago and is struggling to move on and figure out where the band/his musical career goes from here. This is a quick read and a sweet, low angst romance of two men dealing with their pasts, meeting through a great group of mutual friends, and falling for each other. The paranormal aspects weren't really prominent here, but the story was a pleasant one.
