Rainbow Snippet April 29-30

It's weekend, and time for more Rainbow Snippets. The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook asks its members to share six sentence snippets from their work each weekend. Check out the group's Facebook page to read all the snippets and add lots of great books to your tbr. You'll find all sorts of books with the common thread that the main character identifies as LGBTQ+.

I have a snippet of The Sorcerer's Guardian for you today. Savarin and Loriot were sent on a journey by the prince, during which they irritated each other and eventually fell into bed, with the agreement that their affair would last only until they returned home. They arrived back home at the end of their journey late at night, and spent what remained of the night at Savarin's house. This scene takes place early the next morning. (I went a little over six sentences this week—sorry!)
Picture

An arm snaked around his waist and a firm body pressed against his back. Loriot stiffened but then immediately relaxed back into Savarin,
letting himself enjoy the contact.

“Why are you awake?” Savarin asked, his voice sleep-roughened. “It’s too early after such a late night.”

“I’m too used to waking early.” A pang of regret tightened his insides. If he’d gone home last night, he would have been woken up with Alain bounding into his room to welcome him home. He should have gone home. What was the point of spending one last night with Savarin, as enjoyable as it had been, when this—whatever this was—was about to end and he had a child at home waiting for him?

This week I have a snippet of conversation between brothers from The Scholar's Heart for you. I enjoyed exploring the relationship between brothers in Etan and Cathal and also in Tristan and his brother Maxen in this book.
Picture

Etan had taken a few steps away when Cathal called him back. “Etan?” “Yes?”

“If what you did with Tristan... if it makes you happy, even a little,
for a little while, you can let yourself enjoy it. Let yourself be happy.”

“And if I end up hurt at the end of it?”

“Maybe you won’t be.” Cathal shook his head when Etan opened
his mouth to speak. “I know. You said Tristan doesn’t want anything more than to pass a little time enjoyably. But you said you wouldn’t want to try to build anything with him anyway. So if you know at the beginning what it is, why shouldn’t you allow yourself to enjoy it for however long it lasts?”

This week, I have a snippet with Cathal and Flavian from The Artist's Masquerade for you. We're in Flavian's point of view here.
Picture

He watched Cathal, focusing only on him, on the way he moved, sinuous and graceful, a bit incongruous for someone so tall and well built. He held his breath as Cathal came near, turning as Cathal passed behind him, a hairsbreadth away. Flavian’s skin prickled at the proximity, and he let out a shuddering breath when Cathal moved away again.

His hopes that Cathal hadn’t noticed were dashed when Cathal looked at him over his shoulder, a knowing smile curving his full lips. And how he wished that smile didn’t make heat curl through his middle. He could not think of Cathal that way, could not let Cathal affect him that way.

Writing Updates

We're well into April now (somehow!), so it seems to be time for a update. First, an exciting thing: I finished the draft that I've been working on! It's untitled (of course—I'm so bad at titles!), but this is the fantasy romance between two princes, Edmund and Arden, who should not fall in love with one another but do, while trying to avert war and catastrophe and uncover a plot. I'm revising it now, and trying to keep myself on track. For some reason, I always slow down during revisions, but I'm really trying to push through and get this all finished. February and March were productive writing months for me, and I need to keep that going in April's revisions. I really like Edmund and Arden and their world, and I hope you will too when you meet them. It's been fun exploring and creating someplace new. I can't talk too much about other characters at this point because no one has a definite name other than Edmund and Arden. I have so many names to decide on! Which is actually kind of fun. I've always loved names, and I have a stack of name books I'm going to comb through to find the perfect ones.

Once the revisions are done, I plan on writing Tournai 6 (which also, of course, is untitled). I'm excited to get back to Tournai, and I have all sorts of ideas running around in my head for what comes next. You haven't met one of the main characters in Tournai 6 yet, but the other is Maxen, Tristan's brother, whom you met in The Scholar's Heart. After that, I guess we'll see. I still have a contemporary I'd like to finish, and the current project is the first in a duology so at some point I'll start on that as well. Edits for The Dragon's Devotion, the fifth Tournai book, should be starting soon too.

In other news, I'll be at Rainbow Book Fair in New York City on April 29th, so if you're in the area, come see me! I'd love to see you. I'll be selling books, as will many other authors of LGBT books. And lastly, the Tournai books are 25% off at Dreamspinner through April 17th.

This week was pretty busy again so I'm giving you a random snippet again. This one is from The Prince's Consort. Philip has asked Amory to marry him, but Amory is worried that marrying him isn't best for Philip as prince. (It's a little long this weekend. Sorry!)

Picture

“Amory.” Philip took his hands and squeezed them. “Please don’t let other people ruin this. Yes, there will be people who will be upset, but they will get over it. I will continue to rule this country the best way I know how, the way my father raised me to. And better, because you and I will be together, and having you with me makes me better.”

“Being with you makes me better too. Stronger.” He spoke quietly, but he knew Philip heard him because Philip’s eyes shone at his words. “I do love you. Which is why I worry marrying me will hurt you too much. I don’t want to be the cause of trouble for you.”

“If there’s trouble, we’ll weather it together.” Philip drew him closer and began feathering little kisses along his neck. “Marry me, Amory.”

He shivered at the feel of the words breathed against his neck. “Not fair. I can’t think when you do that.”

“Good. I don’t want you to think.”

What I've Been Reading - March

4/6/2017

Does anyone else feel like the year is just rushing by? I can't believe it's April already! March was a busy month for me as I worked toward finishing up a draft, but I got some reading done too. Here are a few books that I enjoyed in March:

A Boy Called Cin by Cecil Wilde: A Boy Called Cin is a May-December billionaire Cinderella-type romance between a bi trans character and a bi genderqueer character. It was a sweet, slow romance, not particularly angsty and just beautiful. The time jumps toward the end were a bit abrupt but that is my only complaint.

The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian: This was a lovely, swoony romance, and I loved Georgie and Lawrence—the con man and the earl who thought he was mad. They were just wonderful together.

Danced Close by Annabeth Albert: Danced Close is now one of my favorite books in this series. It can be read as a stand-alone so you can jump in here if you like. I loved Kendall, the wedding planner who is gender fluid, and Todd, a recovering addict working at a bakery and putting his life back together, and I loved them together, how they accepted each other.

Echoes in Death by JD Robb: I've been reading this series since, I think, I was in high school, which is sort of mind-boggling if I think about it. This is the 44th book in the series, and some are more enjoyable than others, but I always know when I pick one up that I'm going to have a fun visit with some favorite characters.

Prince & Pirate by Elliot Cooper: Prince & Pirate is a thoroughly enjoyable low fantasy with romance, adventure, and pirates. I had lots of fun with this book.

What have you read and loved this past month?
