Rainbow Snippet January 28-29

It's weekend, and time for more Rainbow Snippets. The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook asks its members to share six sentence snippets from their work each weekend. Check out the group's Facebook page to read all the snippets and add lots of great books to your tbr. You'll find all sorts of books with the common thread that the main character identifies as LGBTQ+.

Last week I shared a snippet of Loriot and Savarin's first kiss in The Sorcerer's Guardian, and I thought I'd share some other first kisses from my books. This one is Philip and Amory's in The Prince's Consort.
Picture

When he stood and held out a hand, Amory didn’t hesitate to take it and let the prince draw him to his feet. They were close together, so close Amory could feel the heat of the prince’s body. The prince leaned down the few inches separating them and brushed his
lips over Amory’s.

The kiss was light and quick, but utterly stunning. Amory knew his eyes were wide as he stared at the prince, his breath coming faster, a tingle of warmth shimmering over his entire body. All from one chaste kiss.

Writing Updates

It's been a while (too long!) since I posted any updates for you, partly, at least, because the last couple months of 2016 were not particularly productive writing months. You can probably guess at least some of the reasons for that. This month I've been forcing myself back into writing. Not only because I want to write more stories for all of you, but also because I feel better when I'm writing. It's been a bit slow going, but I'm getting back into it, and I'm hoping that February, and its JeRoWriMo writing challenge, will give me some good progress.

What am I writing? The contemporary I was working on at the end of last year stalled on me again, so I put it aside. I'll come back to it, but I need to figure out why it isn't working at the moment. Instead I started the new year with a new story. (And a new journal for it! I have to have a new journal to make notes and scribble in and sometimes write in for each story. The journal I'm using now is in the photo.) It's a fantasy romance, but not part of the Tournai series. So it's a whole new world to create and explore and all new characters to get to know. Exciting and a little daunting, but I'm enjoying it. No title yet, because I'm horrible with titles, but our main characters are Edmund and Arden. They're princes from neighboring countries, and they should not be falling in love with each other for many, many reasons. Of course that won't stop them (eventually).

After this, I'll have to see how the year goes. I'd love to get back to writing Tournai. There are some characters there (some you've met, some you haven't yet) that are yelling for their stories. Or politely reminding me, depending on their personalities. I'll keep you posted on that. I'd also love to finish writing the contemporary I started. Then, of course, I already know there has to be a second book after the fantasy I've just started. Lots of plans and ideas on the horizon.

I'm sharing a bit from The Sorcerer's Guardian this weekend, and I thought I would give you Loriot and Savarin's first kiss. They've just gotten the last room left in an inn after racing there trying to arrive before a bad storm broke. They didn't, and it's pretty much Savarin's fault. They're a bit annoyed with each other, shall we say?
Picture

"You arrogant, smug—”

Loriot had no idea which of them moved first. Maybe they moved together; he didn’t know. What he did know was that one second Savarin was hurling a litany of insults at him and the next they were kissing. Only kissing was too tame a word for what they were doing.

He and Savarin were devouring each other.

You can find more information about The Sorcerer's Guardian here. It's also on sale this weekend, along with my other books, at Dreamspinner. Thanks for stopping by and reading! Hope you're all taking care of yourselves this weekend.

This weekend, I'm sharing a bit of The Scholar's Heart. In this snippet, Tristan's baby daughter has been kidnapped, and Etan is trying to be there for him—if Tristan will let him.
Picture

“You don’t have to treat me as if I’m fragile. I’m going to be strong for Bria. I’m not going to break.” Tristan’s voice was strained, but his tone was strong as he straightened his spine, pulling away from Etan an
infinitesimal amount that Etan nevertheless felt.

“You can, you know,” he said quietly, trying to convey all his feelings, all that he would do for Tristan in just his voice as he spoke the words. “You can break if you need to, here, with me. I’ll be here, and I’ll hold on to you, and I’ll help you put the pieces back together.”

This weekend I decided to share a snippet from The Prince's Consort with you. Prince Philip's uncle has been pressuring him to marry and produce an heir, but Philip is the happiest and least alone he's ever been with Amory. Here's a snippet of conversation between them about it. (And yes, it's a bit too long! Sorry! I'll do better next time.)
Picture
“What is it? Can I help?”

Philip shook his head and slumped back into the soft cushions. “They’re pressuring me about finding a wife and producing heirs.”

Amory had no idea what to say. It was what he feared. “What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to get married.”

“Oh.” A strange, yawning emptiness opened up inside him as he waited for Philip to tell him his fate.

Philip straightened in his seat and turned Amory to face him. He twined his fingers with Amory’s. “Marry me.”

He was so lost in his own sickening worries that it took him a moment to realize what Philip said, and then he couldn’t believe he’d heard Philip correctly. “What?”

“Marry me, Amory,” Philip repeated. He squeezed Amory’s hands tighter. “Marry me. I want you to be my husband. I want to be yours.”

Philip’s words, so genuine, so filled with heartfelt emotion, melted Amory, and for a moment, he reveled in warmth and joy. But still. “I can’t. We can’t.”

What I've Been Reading - December - and Some 2016 Favorites

1/5/2017

I thought I would start the new year with a post about reading. I posted some of the holiday books I enjoyed last month already, and most of what I read in December were holiday books (and most of those read curled up with hot cocoa near the Christmas tree, which must come down soon—sob), but I read a few things that weren't and some holiday stories after the last post. That's what I'm giving you here. I've also tried to compile a favorites list for you, but I'm horrible at those because I can't limit myself to a reasonable number of anything. But first, here are some (more) books I read and enjoyed in December:
Picture
Winter Oranges by Marie Sexton - This isn't really a holiday story, though it does partly take place over the holidays. It's a warm and lovely romance between a former child star/B-list actor trying to escape Hollywood and a man from the Civil War era trapped outside time.

Hearts Alight by Elliot Cooper - A short Hanukkah romance that's very sweet and has an interesting paranormal elemant. My only complaint is that I would have liked just a bit more.

Disarming Donner by Charlie Cochet - The latest in the author's North Pole series is just as enjoyable as earlier stories in the series. These are such fun holiday stories in a fantasy world I enjoy revisiting. I assume we'll get Dasher's story next year and I'm looking forward to it.

Ibiza on Ice by Gillian St. Kevern - I was slow to warm up to Aston (who is the ex of the main character in The Ugliest Sweater which I also read in December), but the story ended up being a fun and funny holiday romance. Aston grows a lot, and I was cheering for him and Niklas to work it out.

Island of Glass by Nora Roberts - This is the final book in her latest paranormal trilogy, which takes to Ireland where the six guardians must complete their quest, and I enjoyed it (and the previous two books) very much.

A Midnight Clear by Emma Barry and Genevieve Turner - This also isn't really a holiday romance, though part of it does take place over Christmas. I found this to be a delightful story with a charming hero and a very sweet romance. Set in 1948, it's a prequel novella to the authors' Fly Me to the Moon series, which I will absolutely be reading.

Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood - I decided to read this because I'm a huge fan of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and I wanted to try the books that the show is based on. The premise of both is a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia in the 1920s, solving crimes and wearing fabulous clothes. Phryne Fisher is a wonderful character, and I found the novella as enjoyable, though a bit different than the show.

So that's December's reads. As for favorites for the year, they were difficult to decide on. I read 163 books this year and I enjoyed so many of them that it was difficult to choose just a few as favorites and I'm sure I've missed something wonderful that I'll remember and wish I'd included as soon as I post this. But, in random order, here are some favorites from 2016:

Overexposed by Megan Erickson

The High King's Golden Tongue by Megan Derr

Death by Silver and Death at the Dionysus Club by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold

Hexbreaker and Hexmaker by Jordan L. Hawk

Power Play and Empty Net by Avon Gale

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Fallow by Jordan L. Hawk

His Royal Secret and His Royal Favorite by Lilah Pace

Wriggle and Sparkle by Megan Derr

Strong Signal and Fast Connection by Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell

Waiting for the Flood by Alexis Hall

The Obsession by Nora Roberts

A Seditious Affair and A Gentleman's Position by KJ Charles

Dirty Heart by Rhys Ford

Rag and Bone by KJ Charles

I could absolutely keep going, but I'll stop there. I hope you've found something new for your tbr, though. If you want to check out 2016's reading recap posts (in which I talk about each of these books and many others I enjoyed), you can find them here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

What have you been reading lately? And what are you looking forward to reading in 2017? Whatever it is, I hope you read many wonderful books this year.
