The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook asks its members to share six sentence snippets from their work each weekend. Check out the group's Facebook page to read all the snippets and add lots of great books to your TBR. You'll find all sorts of books with the common thread that the main character identifies as LGBTQ.
I'm continuing with snippets from The Spymaster's Secret. It's a book I had so much fun writing, mostly because of the main characters and their dynamic, and I don't think I've shared snippets from it in quite a while. Alexander is a flirtatious, charming young royal with hidden depths who develops an unexpected but not unwelcome attraction to a mysterious older widower. In turn, Marcus is fascinated by the vibrant Alexander, but as the Crown's spymaster, he knows being involved with him is dangerous. Marcus also can't seem to stop himself from becoming more entangled with Alexander even as he tracks a ring of spies and danger creeps up on Alexander. This is another last minute snippet this week, and it's a bit longer than it should be—sorry on both counts! I've skipped ahead just a bit for this snippet. Alexander has gone to Marcus's house for dinner so they can get to know each other better. Alexander was left in the parlor to wait for Marcus, who comes in a few moments later.
“You didn’t.”
“I did a little. You look wonderful.”
“Oh, thank you.” The heat rushed to his cheeks as he stumbled over the words. Why did he feel so awkward? He knew how to take a compliment.
“Shall we...” Marcus’s brow furrowed. “Is that a doll?”
Alexander glanced down. He’d almost forgotten he held it. “I found it on the floor.”
Marcus took the doll when Alexander offered it. “My daughter’s, but I have no idea how it got in here. They aren’t supposed to play in this room.”
He smiled. “Not supposed to doesn’t always mean much to a child.” “Speaking from experience, are you?”
Alexander made himself seem as innocent as possible. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Marcus’s laughter did a lot to smooth the awkwardness. “I’m sure you don’t. I’ve heard stories about you.”
“Oh, have you?”
“I have.” Marcus put the doll on a table and prowled closer.
“Lies, all of them,” Alexander said as he looked up into Marcus’s eyes.
Marcus put an arm around Alexander’s waist and pulled him close. “I’m not sure I believe you.”
Alexander put his hands on Marcus’s chest, but before he could say anything, Marcus kissed him. He gasped, but it quickly turned into a moan. He curled his fingers into the soft wool of Marcus’s jacket and held on. Marcus’s kiss was thorough and consuming, and Alexander didn’t want it to end.
But it did. All too soon.
He blinked rapidly as Marcus drew back. “Hello.”
Marcus smiled a sheepish smile. “Hello. I didn’t mean to do that.”
