The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook asks its members to share six sentence snippets from their work each weekend. Check out the group's Facebook page to read all the snippets and add lots of great books to your TBR. You'll find all sorts of books with the common thread that the main character identifies as LGBTQ.
I'm continuing with snippets from The Spymaster's Secret. It's a book I had so much fun writing, and I don't think I've shared snippets from it in quite a while. Alexander is a flirtatious, charming young royal with hidden depths who develops an unexpected but not unwelcome attraction to a mysterious older widower. In turn, Marcus is fascinated by the vibrant Alexander, but as the Crown's spymaster, he knows being involved with him is dangerous. Marcus also can't seem to stop himself from becoming more entangled with Alexander even as he tracks a ring of spies and danger creeps up on Alexander. This week's snippet follows not long after last week's. We're now in Alexander's point of view.
Alexander stilled and did his best not to show anything of what he felt--the burgeoning disappointment, the sliver of hope--on his face. Not where Marcus could see. “Planned to?”
“Planned. But I don’t think I can.” Marcus lifted a hand, then let it fall. He took a step closer. “I saw you and...”
Everything inside Alexander went warm, a delightful sense of anticipation replacing his uncertainty. “Will you kiss me?”
Marcus watched him for one breathless moment before reaching up and removing his mask. He moved slowly, deliberately, toward Alexander and stretched a hand out to cup his cheek. Alexander leaned into that big hand and let his eyes flutter shut on a sigh. He wanted more, but being touched this way was lovely. He wouldn’t mind much more of it too.
“Alexander.” His name came out quietly, a breath of sound that struck Alexander as resigned more than anything else.
Before he could open his eyes to look at Marcus, to try to see what he was feeling, Marcus’s lips were on his.
