The Rainbow Snippets group on Facebook asks its members to share six sentence snippets from their work each weekend. Check out the group's Facebook page to read all the snippets and add lots of great books to your TBR. You'll find all sorts of books with the common thread that the main character identifies as LGBTQ.
I'm switching to snippets from The Spymaster's Secret this month. It's a book I had so much fun writing, and I don't think I've shared snippets from it in quite a while. Alexander is a flirtatious, charming young royal with hidden depths who develops an unexpected but not unwelcome attraction to a mysterious older widower. In turn, Marcus is fascinated by the vibrant Alexander, but as the Crown's spymaster, he knows being involved with him is dangerous. Marcus also can't seem to stop himself from becoming more entangled with Alexander even as he tracks a ring of spies and danger creeps up on Alexander. This week's snippet follows directly after last week's in which Alexander asked Marcus to dance with him at the masquerade ball.
“I might enjoy dancing with you too,” Marcus admitted quietly, the words pulled from him. He shook his head when Alexander’s eyes lit up. Marcus hated to let him down, hated to deny himself as well. “I can’t.”
Alexander’s lips pulled down in a slight frown, and Marcus immediately missed the teasing smile. He stared at Marcus for a long moment. “Is it that you don’t want to dance with me, or that you’d rather not draw attention doing it?”
Marcus’s lips parted. Alexander was far quicker than most gave him credit for. Marcus didn’t want the attention a dance with the flirtatious royal cousin would garner him. His work meant staying in the shadows, or at least not standing out.
Alexander nodded. “We don’t have to dance in front of everyone.”
He frowned. “You’re proposing something.”
“I am. Meet me in the South Gallery.”
