I'm sharing some snippets from the first book in my Elemental Magicae series, A Dance of Water and Air, this month. In A Dance of Water and Air, Edmund is a demisexual prince with an Affinity for Water magic, who is told by his father the king that he must marry the queen of a neighboring country. He makes the long journey there, only to find himself ignored and alone and confused by the undercurrents at this new court, but he does strike up a friendship—and end up falling in love with—the queen's brother, Arden. Then Edmund is blamed for an attempt on the queen's life and thrown in the dungeon. Arden helps him escape, and the two run, hoping to uncover whatever plot is threatening them and their countries...and to find a way to be together. This snippet is the very beginning of the book.
Edmund swam, long limbs slicing through the clear, warm water. His mind quieted in the repetitive motion, in the weightlessness and the comfort of being surrounded by his Element. Everything washed away, leaving him calm and relaxed, the only time he ever was lately.
If only he could stay there.
He imagined it for a moment. Spending his life swimming and sailing. All his time in the soothing embrace of the water, or at the shore or bank, feeling Water’s power, learning to use its magic. It was a lovely dream. A lovely, impossible dream.
